Stop Buying the Spec Sheet: Komatsu PC210 Excavator, 360 Specs, Scissor Lifts, and Heat Pump Water Heaters

I don't think most buyers actually buy equipment. They buy a number on a spec sheet. That's a mistake, and I say that as someone who reviews spec sheets for a living.

I'm a quality and compliance manager in the heavy equipment industry. Before a product configuration reaches our dealers, I review it. Roughly 200 items a year, maybe 180—I'd have to count. I've rejected first deliveries because a dimension was off by an inch, and I've argued with vendors about tolerances that seemed small on paper but would have been huge on a jobsite. The lesson I keep coming back to: the most important spec isn't the biggest number on the page. It's the one that matches the job.

The Komatsu PC210 Excavator: A Good Machine, But Not Because of the Weight

Take the Komatsu PC210 excavator. It's one of the most common 20-tonne excavators on earth, and for good reason. The current generation has a net power in the 125 kW range and an operating weight above 20 tonnes, depending on configuration. Those are fine numbers. But they don't tell you whether the machine is the right PC210 for your job.

What matters more is hydraulic flow and pressure. A PC210 with the right arm and bucket can move a lot of material, but if you need deep digging, you want reach and breakout force more than bucket volume. Breakout force is measured according to ISO 6015, and any responsible dealer should be able to tell you the reference. If a spec sheet doesn't say how a number was measured, treat it as a marketing number.

I remember watching a contractor buy a PC210LC because it was "the bigger version." They assumed the LC—long undercarriage—meant more capacity. It does improve stability, but it also adds weight. On soft ground, that can hurt more than help. The machine got stuck twice in the first week. Not because it was a bad excavator, but because the spec they chose was the wrong one for the ground.

Komatsu 360 Excavator Specs: Read Them in Context

The same logic applies to the Komatsu 360 class. When people send me Komatsu 360 excavator specs, they usually want to compare horsepower. Yes, the 360-class machine has more of everything: more engine power, more bucket capacity, more digging depth. But if your plan is to use it on a slope, you need to look at tail-swing radius and ground pressure. If you're loading trucks, you need reach at a specific height, not just maximum reach on the spec sheet.

A 36-tonne machine can quickly become a liability if you use it near the edge of its lifting chart. I've seen operators push the machine to the edge of its rated lifting chart because the load was right at the limit. The spec sheet said "lifting capacity: X kilograms." It didn't say "X kilograms, but only with the bucket removed, the arm at a certain length, and the machine on level ground." Those conditions matter.

For excavators, engine power is commonly measured per SAE J1349. Digging force is measured per ISO 6015. Those references let two machines be compared fairly. Without them, you're comparing apples to oranges.

Scissor Lifts: The Smallest Number Can Be the Most Important

The same pattern shows up with scissor lifts. Most buyers look at platform height and call it done. I've done that myself. Once, I had 48 hours to pick a scissor lift for a maintenance job. Normally I'd compare specs side by side, but there was no time. I rented a 19-ft lift because the platform height was what I was sure about. It didn't fit under a low beam, and the stowed width blocked an aisle. The rental cost $200 less than the alternative. The rework cost us about $600.

Looking back, I should have checked the stowed height and the turning radius first. That's the trap: we make decisions under pressure, and then the machine makes the decision for us.

Willow Pump and Heat Pump Water Heaters: Same Lesson, Different Industry

Pumps are where the spec-sheet trap gets even more obvious. A site superintendent once showed me a purchase order for a "Willow pump." I knew what he meant—Wilo, the pump manufacturer. The misspelling happens more often than you'd think. But the real problem wasn't the spelling. The pump they'd chosen had a bigger motor than the one they were replacing, so everyone assumed it would move more water.

It didn't. A pump's job isn't to consume power; it's to move a certain flow rate against a certain head. The motor size doesn't tell you the duty point. The replacement pump cost $400 less. At the required head, it moved about 30% less water. That added two days to the dewatering schedule—$1,600 in rental and labor. Net loss: about $1,200. The surprise wasn't the performance difference. It was how easily a cheap pump became an expensive one.

Now, the heat pump water heater. If you've ever asked, "what is a heat pump water heater?" you're not alone. It's a water heater that uses electricity to move heat from the surrounding air into the tank instead of generating heat directly with a resistance element. That means the tank size alone doesn't tell you how much hot water it can produce. The numbers that matter are the Uniform Energy Factor—UEF—defined by the U.S. Department of Energy test procedure, and the first-hour rating. A smaller tank with a good heat pump can outperform a larger tank with a weak element.

The reason I bring this up in a construction context is that the same people who buy a Komatsu excavator also make decisions about site utilities. They're not stupid. They just think in categories. But when they move from one category to another, they reach for the familiar spec. Horsepower, power, weight. Those are comfort zones—and they don't translate.

So What Should You Look For?

Let me be clear: I'm not saying specs are useless. They're necessary, but they're not sufficient. Some people will tell me that numbers give you a starting point. I agree. The problem is when the starting point becomes the finishing point. A spec sheet is a summary, not the full story. It can tell you what a machine will do under standard test conditions. It cannot tell you how it will behave on your slope, in your rain, with your operator.

That's why I ask three questions before approving anything:

  • What is the actual duty point?
  • What standard was used to measure the spec?
  • What happens when the working condition is different from the test condition?

Those questions apply to a Komatsu PC210 excavator, a Komatsu 360-class machine, a scissor lift, a dewatering pump, and yes, a heat pump water heater. The equipment is different. The logic isn't.

There's something satisfying about watching a customer order the right machine the first time. After enough late nights and rework, you learn to explain the nuance upfront.

So stop buying the spec sheet. Start buying the machine that fits the work. That's the only spec that can't be fudged.
