But the PC16R rescue should never have been necessary. A little prevention, a little willingness to stop and listen for twenty minutes, and that final drive motor would have been swapped on a schedule, at a sensible hour, at a predictable cost. Instead, it became a 48-hour race with a flatbed truck, a night mechanic, and $5,135 on the line.

The math is brutally simple: $5,135 for the cure, about $200 for the prevention. The only thing more expensive than paying for prevention is explaining why you didn't.
