Komatsu Hydraulic Oil Specifications: The $4,800 Mistake I Made Before Calling a Houston Dealer

According to Komatsu's official Operation & Maintenance Manuals, the required hydraulic oil depends on the machine model, hydraulic system, ambient temperature, and duty cycle. A spec that works in a temperate climate may be wrong for a Houston summer or a mining application running hot all day. ISO VG 46 and ISO VG 68 are viscosity grades, not brand names. They come from ISO 3448, and they only tell you one part of the story.

You also need to check:

  • Cleanliness level, often expressed with ISO 4406 codes.
  • Additive package compatibility with your pump and seals.
  • Komatsu's own fluid part numbers or approved equivalents.
  • Whether the machine has a specific service fill after a major repair.

  2. Where is the center of gravity, and can the truck's bed and tie-downs handle it?
  3. Would a straight truck be safer and faster than two pickup runs?

Many Houston crews run mixed fleets. A Kubota skid steer might be on the same site as a Komatsu excavator. The fluids are not interchangeable by default.
