How to Inspect a Used Komatsu Forklift Before You Buy

You're Not Looking for a Paperweight

My experience is based on inspecting roughly 200+ used heavy equipment units over the last four years. If you're buying from a private seller or auction, your mileage may vary. But if you're looking at a used Komatsu forklift, there's a decent chance I've seen a machine that looks just like it—with or without hidden issues.

The question everyone asks is: "what's the price?" The question they should ask is: "what's the condition of everything that matters?"

Here's a five-step checklist. Follow it. It won't guarantee a perfect buy, but it will keep you from writing a check for a repair shop.

Step 1: Start with the Papers (Not the Paint)

Most buyers walk straight to the forklift and start looking at the paint. Don't be most buyers. Start with the documentation.

You want to see:

  • The Komatsu serial number plate. It should be riveted to the frame, not stuck on with double-sided tape (yes, I've seen fake plates).
  • An owner's manual or maintenance log. Not a photocopy of one. An actual record.
  • The hour meter reading. This is the second-most-reliable indicator of wear. (The first is the oil analysis, which we'll get to in Step 4.)

In 2023, I saw a forklift with 4,200 hours on the meter. The seller claimed it was a "low-hours machine." The logbook showed oil changes every 500 hours, which was consistent with the reading. Then I checked the oil pan drain plug. It was stripped. Someone had clearly put a wrench to it more times than 4,200 hours would suggest. Meter tampering isn't rare—it's just never admitted.

Verdict: If the hour meter is broken or has been reset, treat the machine as if it has 5,000+ hours. Don't negotiate on price; negotiate on condition.

Step 2: The Obvious Check (That Most People Miss)

Everyone looks at the tires and the mast. That's good. But here's what they miss: the condition of the overhead guard and the counterweight welds.

Forklifts get bounced around. The mast takes the worst of it. But the overhead guard—that's where a lot of stress fractures start. And they're not always visible from a standing position.

I ran a blind test with our sales team a few years back: same Komatsu 3-ton model, one with a cracked overhead guard weld (not visible unless you lay on the floor), one without. 9 out of 10 sales guys picked the cracked one as "more professional." The repair cost on the cracked guard was around $400 (circa 2022). Plus downtime. On a used unit, that's a $400 discount you didn't know you needed to ask for.

Checklist item, right now: Get on your hands and knees. Look at the welds on the underside of the overhead guard. Any cracking? Any signs of repair that looks like a home-fixer with a stick welder? Walk away.

Step 3: The Engine Bay—Where the Real Story Lives

Pop the hood. Not just for a look—for a feel.

I've learned to never assume the exterior reflects the engine condition. I once saw a used Komatsu forklift in 2024 that had a pristine paint job. The owner had clearly spent the week before cleaning it up. Good for resale, right? But when I pulled the dipstick, the oil was clean—too clean. Like, freshly changed clean. That's suspicious. Why change the oil right before a sale? Because the old oil was probably filled with metal.

You can't prove that with a dipstick alone. But you can do this:

  • Smell the oil. Burnt smell = overheating or fuel dilution.
  • Check the coolant. Is it rusty? That suggests corrosion in the block.
  • Look for oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil. The milkshake look is game over.

Quick story (circa late 2023): A dealer offered us a fleet of six used Komatsu forklifts. They all had new paint, new tires, and a $50 price per unit premium. After doing the dipstick test on three of them, I rejected the entire lot. The repair costs would have been higher than the savings. Saving $300 per unit on paper cost us nothing in reality. Period.

Step 4: The One Test That Separates the Pros from the Check-Writers

If you stop here, you'll miss the biggest hidden cost: the hydraulic system.

Forklift hydraulics are tough. But they do wear. And when they fail, you're looking at a $4–$8k repair (depending on the model).

Here's the test: start the engine. Let it warm up for 2 minutes. Then fully extend the mast to maximum lift, retract it, and do it again. Listen for any whining, chattering, or hesitation. If the mast doesn't go up smoothly, something is wrong.

Then check for drift. Lift a load (even a small one) to about halfway. Shut off the engine. If the mast drops more than a few inches in 10 minutes, the hydraulic cylinders are leaking. That's not a cheap fix.

Important note: I've only worked with used forklifts in the 2–5 ton range—Komatsu's heavy-duty line, mostly diesels. If you're looking at a smaller electric model, the hydraulic system might be different. In fact, a lot of the electric models use different seals. My advice applies best to the diesel FG/FD series.

Step 5: The Final $300 Check (That Nobody Asks For)

Most people focus on the engine and the lift. But there's a component that can strand you faster than a failed transmission: the DC alternator or the voltage regulator on the engine.

Forklift alternators aren't like car alternators. They get covered in dust, grease, and heat. A failing alternator won't kill the engine immediately—but it will kill the battery, and then the fuel pump won't get power, and you're stuck.

If the seller won't let you run a voltage test on the battery while idling, that's a red flag. The reading should be around 13.5V to 14.5V. Anything lower means the alternator is on its way out. Replacement parts for Komatsu alternators run about $300–$500, plus labor. It's not a dealbreaker, but it's a negotiable item.

Bonus check: Look at the battery terminals. Corrosion means poor maintenance. I've seen machines with brand-new batteries that had corroded terminals just because the owner didn't clean them. That's a pattern of neglect.

A Few Things I've Learned the Hard Way

  • Don't trust the hour meter alone. Check the seat condition, pedal wear, and tire wear for consistency.
  • Ask: "What's NOT included?" Does the price include delivery? Throttle linkage? Air filter? Battery? Final drive inspection? Some sellers strip parts off before selling. I've seen a forklift sold "as-is" that was missing its entire intake manifold (surprise, surprise).
  • If it's a local dealer (like Crewe Tractor or similar), they've usually done some prep work. But that doesn't mean they've done all of it. Always verify with the checklist.

Final thought (as of January 2025): Buying a used Komatsu forklift isn't rocket science. But it's not a trip to a supermarket either. The dealers who list all the fees upfront—even if the total looks higher—usually cost less in the end. The vendor who hides the repair history? That's a risk I wouldn't take.
