Stand at the edge of a wet field and watch a stork and a crane. From a distance, they're hard to tell apart. Long legs. Long neck. Same slow wingbeat. Up close, the differences are obvious—but only if you know what to look for. That's the stork vs crane problem in construction equipment.
The Komatsu excavator PC200 and the Komatsu 138 are both "a yellow excavator" from the curb. On paper, they're different machines built for different work. I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at Komatsu. I review documentation for roughly 200 machine deliveries a year, and over four years in this role I've watched the same costly mistake repeat: contractors choosing the wrong size class. Not the wrong brand. The wrong size. And that doesn't show up in the showroom photos. It shows up on the job, in lost hours, tight gateways, and transport headaches.
So let's set the frame: there is no universal "best" here. There are scenarios. Your first job is to figure out which one you're in—before you start comparing spec sheets.
Three Questions That Classify Your Situation
Before you get to horsepower and bucket volumes, answer these three honestly:
- How much material are you moving in a normal week? If you track weekly excavation volume in cubic meters, or you're loading trucks on a cycle, you're in a different production class than someone doing smaller digs by the hour.
- Can your transport actually move the machine you're considering? A 20-ton class excavator is a different conversation than a 13-ton class machine. Trailer capacity, permitting, and site access all shift.
- What's your current jobsite power setup? No compressor or generator yet? Then that's part of this purchase—more on that in Scenario C.
Your answers put you in one of three scenarios. Here's what each one looks like.
Scenario A: Production Excavation—Komatsu Excavator PC200
You're in Scenario A if your week involves serious volume. Think 500+ cubic meters of earth moved regularly, foundation or pipeline trenches that stay deep all week, or a steady queue of trucks waiting under the bucket. That's production work, and it wants a 20-ton class machine.
The Komatsu excavator PC200 (11-series, which has held this class in recent model years) runs around 20.3 metric tons operating weight, roughly 148 horsepower, max digging depth near 6.6 meters, and bucket capacity between 0.8 and 1.0 cubic meters depending on configuration. Those are the numbers that decide whether a machine can maintain a production cycle.
What I check when a PC200 crosses my inspection desk: whether the delivered machine matches the documentation. Serial tags. Counterweight spec. Bucket size. Sounds basic, but in Q1 2024 alone I flagged two first deliveries where the bucket didn't match the order paperwork. Both would have caused permit and balance trouble for the customer.
That kind of verification gets tense under time pressure. A dealer once had two hours to release a machine before the customer's transport permit lapsed. Normally I'd walk the lot and check tags myself. There was no time. I signed off on the dealer's word and a set of photos. Worked out fine, but I wouldn't run that play again (and honestly, we shouldn't have to—the verification protocol exists so customers don't inherit our gambles).

Scenario B: Compact, Utility Work—Komatsu 138 Excavator Specs
You're in Scenario B if tight access defines your jobs. Residential basements behind existing homes. Water and sewer taps in built-up neighborhoods. Sites with a four-meter gate and neighbors who file noise complaints by Wednesday.
Current Komatsu 138 excavator specs: operating weight around 13.3 metric tons, about 97 horsepower, max digging depth from 5.2 to 5.5 meters depending on boom configuration, and bucket capacity from 0.45 to 0.70 cubic meters. The 138 is roughly 35% lighter than the PC200, which changes everything about how you move it between sites.
Here's where I'll say something that not every sales rep will: not every customer is "working their way up" to a bigger machine. A contractor running a 138 in dense urban work is running a deliberately sized business. The 138 isn't a starter machine. It's the right tool for a specific category of work. Our support and spec verification don't change based on the size of the order—and neither should any vendor's attitude. It's happened enough times in my review queue, watching small orders become repeat customers, that I know it's a pattern, not a slogan.
One practical note: the 138's lighter transport profile saves money on every move. For a contractor doing six or seven site moves a season, that's real money—as much as fuel economy, in my book.
Scenario C: The Supporting Cast—DeWalt Air Compressor and Predator Generator
Whichever excavator you choose, you'll eventually hit the same question: what else needs to be on site? Pneumatic tools, filter cleaning, blowing out lines—all of it wants compressed air. No grid power on site? You want a generator. These two pieces of supporting gear make or break a working day, and they're usually an afterthought.
What a DeWalt Air Compressor Can (and Can't) Do
It's not about brand. It's about CFM at 90 psi—the number that tells you whether a compressor can sustain an air tool. A portable unit in the 4.5-gallon, 165-psi class, like the ones DeWalt sells, will run nailers, impacts, and blow guns all day. It won't run a heavy grinder or any serious sandblasting. Check the CFM requirement on your most demanding tool, add 30–50% margin, and buy to that number. (Tank size matters less than people think. A bigger tank just cycles less often; it doesn't increase sustained CFM.)
Why a Predator Generator Earned Its Place on Our Trailers
I'll admit a surprise here. In 2023, we ran a field test pitting a Predator generator (the 3500-watt inverter class) against a unit that cost nearly twice as much. Same load. Same fuel. Same test trailer. Never expected the budget unit to keep up on both fronts—but it did. The expensive one was quieter, sure. For the price, though, Predator-class inverters earned a legitimate spot on a budget-conscious jobsite.
That doesn't mean you should undersize one. Lesson from a different trailer: too-small generator, rainy week, four crew members draining battery chargers and work lights simultaneously. Looking back, I should have over-specified from the start. The generator wasn't the problem. My sizing math was. (And I never got a straight answer from the sales rep about the surge rating. Surprise, surprise.)
Here's the rule I actually use:
List every device you'll plug in. Sum the running watts. Add 25%. Buy a generator that covers that on continuous output—not on peak.
For a small to mid-size crew, the 3500-watt inverter class is a solid starting point. If you're running electric heaters or serious saws, step up a class. Buy on the list, not on reputation.
How to Judge Which Scenario You're In
If you're still not sure, stop reading and answer these:
- Scenario A (PC200 class): you routinely move 500+ cubic meters per week, load trucks steadily, or cut deeper than 5 meters on the regular.
- Scenario B (Komatsu 138): tight urban or residential access, multiple site moves per week, average dig depths under 5 meters.
- Power: need compressed air? Match CFM to the heaviest tool. Need off-grid electricity? Sum the watts, add 25%, buy one size up from comfortable.
The most common mistake I see isn't choosing the wrong brand. It's skipping these questions and buying whatever a neighbor or a rental counter recommended. Be honest about your situation and the spec sheet will do its job.
Stork vs Crane—The Point of This Whole Comparison
At a glance, a stork and a crane are easy to confuse. Both are big wading birds. Both fly with their necks outstretched. The real differences—feather detail, flight style, behavior—only show up when you know what to look for.
The Komatsu excavator PC200 and the Komatsu 138 are the same kind of challenge in machine form. Both are "yellow excavators" from the curb, but they're built for different work and different jobsite realities. One is a production machine. The other is a precision machine. Neither is the wrong answer everywhere. The wrong answer is choosing one without knowing which situation you're actually in.
