It started with a forklift. A Komatsu FG25 that had been with us for about eight years, the kind of workhorse you stop noticing until it stops working. The hydraulic pump went. Our mechanic said it wasn't catastrophic, just worn out. 'You can get a reman unit for about a third of the price,' he told me. 'Or you can go genuine Komatsu.'
On paper, it was a no-brainer. I was managing our annual procurement budget—roughly $180,000 across parts, service contracts, and consumables. Forging a receipts folder from Q3 2022, I remembered the math. The aftermarket pump was $410. The Komatsu pump was $1,150. That's a $740 difference. If you're looking at a spreadsheet without context, the decision takes about four seconds.
I almost went with the cheap one. I'm glad I didn't.
